Football: Footbrawl at Jalan Besar between Young Lions and Beijing Guoan
Posted: 08 September 2010 0043 hrs

SINGAPORE: It was supposed to be a football contest.

But Tuesday night's Great Eastern-Yeo's S-League match between the Young Lions and Beijing Guoan at Jalan Besar Stadium disintegrated into a brawl, forcing referee Zaid Hussein to abandon the game minutes before the final whistle.

Young Lions' midfielders Gabriel Quak and Faritz Abdul Hameed were sent to hospital after they were injured.

An investigation was launched almost immediately and in a statement issued last night, the Football Association Singapore (FAS) said: "The FAS takes a serious view of this gross misconduct by the players. We are conducting an investigation into this matter and the perpetrator's will be dealt with severely."

Players and officials from both sides, including match commissioner Clement Teo, will be interviewed and video footage will also be used.

Watched by 814 spectators - the official attendance figure given - the melee involved players and officials from both sides and erupted after Young Lions' Afiq Yunos grabbed an 88th minute equaliser to cancel out Zhang Ye's 48th minute opener for Beijing.

It is believed the equaliser caused Beijing's frustrations to boil over, leading to late tackles and eventually the melee, which also saw Young Lions' team manager Eugene Loo pushed to the ground.

Gabriel suffered an injury to his arm while Faritz sustained a head injury.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a fan who saw everything unfold, said: "After going a goal up, Beijing were under siege from the Young Lions and there was a lot of time-wasting from them, plus a series of niggly skirmishes.

"After the equaliser, two separate fights broke out almost simultaneously, and the referee, his assistants and the fourth official all went onto the pitch to try and quell the situation.

"However, they couldn't control things and some players were even chasing each other around the pitch. Thankfully, it was all over in about three minutes."

According to the FAS, the match will now be rescheduled. - CNA/fa

Fallacy of PAP Immigration Policy

Old Goat, Gay Loong and Goh Choked Dong have been defending their pathetic immigration policy ad nauseam. I look at all the things they have said and...

Old Goat, Gay Loong and Goh Choked Dong have been defending their pathetic immigration policy ad nauseam. I look at all the things they have said and done to date and nothing makes sense at all. Unfortunately, many Sinkies believe it or not have actually swallowed this drivel. Summing up as follows:

1) We need these many new immigrants because our population growth rate is so low - Well, who's fault is this? Who was ramming the stop at 2 policy down our throats in the 70's and 80's? Lawyers who don't know anything about population growth should stop acting like they did. Also, how does othe low population growth countries like Japan manage without importing millions of FTs? Rather than examine why the birth rate is so low, and doing something about it, they just blindly allow every tom dick and harry in.

2) These new immigrants are skilled and we need these people - So, what the PAP is saying is that dispite our much vaunted world classs education system, we still cannot produce skilled people to do these jobs? In fact, our people are so unskilled that an Indian, or Chinese with degrees from Universities that we have never heard off is better than our graduates? If the PAP says that we don't have enough of these skilled people, who's fault is it? For decades, there was only NUS. They needed many more tertiary instituitions decades ago, and not the new flood of unis.

3) We need to reach a population of 6-6.5 million - Why? For critical mass? Where is the studies to show that this is necessary? PAP is so good at doing surveys, studies, committees, well lets see some hard evidence. Where is the infrastructure to support these people? What is the impact on housing prices, diseases, social ills etc. that these extra people bring. HFMD epidemic outbreak in S'pore? Are u shitting me? In the 70s, 80s, where got HFMD? Did the PAP just pull this number out of their ass?

4) These people are rigourously screened before they come here - Really? Why are there gang fights between PRC gangs, robberies, rapes, molestation, assaults etc. on such a regular scale than? Can MOM and ICA say they did criminal background checks on all these million plus people they let in? Or did the agents just bribe someone at ICA to let them in? How can background checks be verified in countries such as India and china where u can buy anything with a bribe.

5) These new immigrants will contribute to and help S'pore - There has been absolutely no evidence of this so far. On the contrary, the opposite seems to be true. We see new waves of crimes, immigrants displacing locals from jobs, causing the rise in housing prices, etc. They also do no do NS hence contributing nothing to the security and defence of the country.

6) Our population growth rate is too low, revisited - I think the population replacement rate is actually low, but not any lower than many industrialised countries. Where it differs is that not only do locals have to give birth at a rate that replaces the dead, they also have to give birth to replace the people that have left singapore for other countries. Lets face it, everyone in singapore knows a few people who have moved overseas on a permanently basis whether its US, Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, China etc. These people are not coming back except for vacation. They in turn marry and have kids, all of whom are now citizens of their new countries. If everyone adds up all the people they know who have done this, we are looking at perhaps 1 million would-be S'poreans that are gone.

7) If the PAP immigration policy was so great, the PAP would not need to spend an inordinate amount of time promoting it. They would not have to include PRC bus drivers in their NDP rally speeches, they would not need Shit times to constantly highlight great FTs etc. If FTs really created jobs and did all those other fantastic things the PAP says, the local people would see and recognise this and would appreciate them without the PAP exhorting them to do so. This is far from the case.

In my opinion, real basis of the PAP immigration policy is 2 fold. One is vendetta, and the other is pure greed.

Old Goat has know for years that people were leaving S'pore. this was and still is taken as a personal insult by him. here he is telling the world leaders and everyone else who would listen that he performed an economic miracle in S'pore and sinkies are so much better off with him. yet on the other hand, sinkies are leaving for other countries in droves, and hence calling him a boldface liar, and repudiating his claims that S'pore is a great place to live. he tried to reverse this by first threatening and cajoling people and trying to bully them into not leaving. He and his minions used words like quitters, and weak, and what not to characterise sinkies that move away. When this tactic failed, he tried to placate them by offering to make it easy for them to retain ties with the motherland, and other carrots. But again, no one was buying this, because real reform involves him letting go of some control. In the end, he has now given up and since he cannot stem the outflow, he has decided to punish all sinkies by letting in massive numbers of FTs to make life hard for everyone. this is the vendetta aspect

The greed aspect is very simple. the S'pore economy is vastly majority controlled indirectly or directly by the govt. thru GLCs, stat boards, monopolies, etc. Rather than increase productivity and making more efficient use of the limited manpower (done thru capital investments in automation, robots, equipment), these companies went for short term gains by just going into cohoots with the MOM and importing massive amounts of cheap labour. The problem is the whole system is run on a for profit basis. GLCs and other govt. agencies compete directly with private companies in providing many goods and services for the same customers. These GLCs and govt. agencies have to show a profit to their owners, the govt. These same companies are feeding troughs for govt. favourites who know nothing about running a sucessful business. It is therefore in their interest to save wages by importing a FT who will do a job for $1500 and replace him with a sinkie who was doing it for $3000 before. It does not occur to them they can make the sinkie more productive if they provide him with a piece of machinery that can do the job of 2 or 3 people and train him in how to use it. It does notmake sense to them because this machinery costs money, and labour can be easily obtain thru their mafia with the MOM.

These are just my observations.

Echoing the words of Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, the Temasek Review has become a “victim” of our own success as our surging readership far outstripped our limited resources to maintain the site.
The Temasek Review was previously run by rotating teams of volunteers who contributed to its servers out of their own pockets, but its astonishing climb in readership means that it is no longer feasible for it to rely solely on advertising in the long run.
Referring to the post by our reader Forecaster Extraordinarie II dated 25th August 2010 entitled, Temasek Review has Singapore Press Holdings to thank for their success, Temasek Review was then ranked 74,089 in the world and 199 in Singapore.
Ranking as of 26th August 2010

Our readership have multiplied ten-fold since our last appeal for donations towards a new dedicated server on 16th August 2010 (Temasek Review needs a new server urgently). Temasek Review is now ranked 63,930 in the world and 162 in Singapore, moving up the charts to surpass TodayOnline who is now ranked 203 in Singapore, considering the fact that TodayOnline is owned by MediaCorp and has full-time journalists and techinical staff manning it.
Ranking as of 7th September 2010

With the rapid increase in readership, our servers are constantly running at near its maximum capacity during peak hours causing a noticeable decline in access speed and longer site loading time.
Success comes at a price and Temasek Review urgently needs a new server to offload and balance the increase in traffic which is expected to increase tremendously come Election Day.
The deployment cost of the planned new server is US$1,300.00 and we have only managed to raise US$674.85 in donations as of 6th September 2010 (excluding the cost of the TemasekVPN server which is on consignment arrangement). The lease for the new server will be paid for by our advertising revenues.
As much as we would prefer not to, we are now stuck in an awkward situation whereby we may be forced to start banning accesses by Country instead of just network blocks. We might even need to continue banning Singapore ISP’s netblocks if the situation worsens.
Unfortunately there is nothing we can do at the moment due to financial constraints but in the meantime, we would like to say a big “THANK YOU” to those who have donated towards our new server and would like to appeal to our other readers to please support our site by making a token donation if you believe in our cause.
Readers interested in making a donation can do so with their Credit or Debit card which will be processed by our payment processor, MoneyBookers. All information submitted will be kept strictly confidential, none of your payment information will be stored on our server except email address.
Alternatively you may also support our site by ordering a TemasekVPN from us at a discounted price of US$60.00 for 6 months, click for more information.
Mr Green is expected to say Britain needs 'smarter immigration controls - controls which bear down on the numbers coming and welcome those we really need here', according to the speech extracts.
'We cannot assume that everyone coming here has skills that the UK workforce cannot offer and we will not make Britain prosperous in the long term by telling our own workers not to bother to learn new skills as we can bring them all in from overseas.'
The stricter controls are part of a strategy to slash net immigration figures which ballooned under Labour.
The research released by the Home Office yesterday tracked the paths of migrants who came to Britain in 2004. The largest group given visas in that year was made up of foreign students. Of the 186,000 granted, more than a fifth were still residing in the country five years later. Officials fear many may be working illegally.
The number of visas being issued to students and their dependants had risen to over 300,000 by this year, the figures showed.
Government ministers also intend to scrutinise work visas. Some 106,000 work visas were issued in 2004, and two-fifths of this group were still living in the country last year.
A Home Office spokesman said the thrust of the reform focuses on how people entering the country manage to switch easily from temporary residency to permanent citizenship.
The government is expected to scrutinise all routes into Britain, after official figures showed only around half of student visas issued were for university courses.
'I don't want to interfere with the success stories of our universities,' Mr Green told BBC Radio.
But he said there was a need to examine closely sub-degree courses and the reasons for students remaining in the country.
The National Union of Students, however, dismissed Mr Green's comments as a 'politically motivated misinterpretation' of the facts.
Ms Sally Hunt, general secretary of the University and College Union, told the BBC: 'Populist policies on immigration might play well domestically, but on the global stage we risk looking foolish.'

I have to agree on the issue of transparency with regards to immigration policy. I too was an assistant Prof in Singapore (Australian with PhD in Business from UK). I decided to move to Singapore because i meet and married a Singaporean in Australia.
After many years working and living in Australia we decided to move to Singapore to be near my aging in-laws. In the 7yrs I worked at NTU, I applied for to become a PR (Mind you with the aim of making a family and life in Singapore) three times and was rejected on all three occasion.
I tried to seek an explanation for my rejections every time, but was met with stiff responses from the authorities eg, please apply at a later date.
Whats worse is that during my time at NTU I attended several PR parties for staff from PRC, who got their PR within 6-12 months of arriving in SG. At the end we caved in and returned to Australia, which I was subsequently able to get my in-laws PR in Australia.
I let people be the judge about transparent immigration policies after telling them my story. For once I say – don’t vote PAP out, instead, do as Australian politicians suggest ‘Keep the BASTARDS HONEST’
Bus operator SBS Transit is investing S$268 million to bring in new single and double-deck buses over the next two years.
With the new fleet of buses, elderly passengers will no longer need to climb at least two steps which are part of the aisle of the current buses as the new ones are flushed flat from the front of the bus to the back. It will also have more than 10 priority seats which will be easily accessible for the elderly and the handicapped.
In a statement released on Monday, SBS said it will be paying S$110 million for 300 Mercedes Citaro, and adding another 300 new double-deck buses from Volvo.
SBS Transit Chief Executive Officer Gan Juay Kiat said the latest purchase is part of the renewal programme where two out of every three buses in the SBS Transit fleet will be new.
Some commuters Yahoo! Singapore spoke to welcomed the announcement of the new buses.
Said retiree Paul Lo, 63, ¡°My legs aren¡¯t as strong as before so at least I won¡¯t have to climb up the steps with the new buses.¡±
Another retiree, Doris Tay, 62 agreed. She said, ¡°It¡¯s good that there are also additional priority seats for the elderly on the news buses as most of the time the buses are packed.¡±
Housewife Sharimah Ahmad, 48, hopes that the cost of the new buses will not be transferred back to commuters.
¡°It¡¯s good that they [SBS] are doing something with the new investment but I hope they are not going to increase the bus fares to recover back the money they are spending,¡± she said.
The latest bus purchase of S$268 million brings SBS Transit¡¯s total investment in new buses over the last five years to S$854 million. It will also lower the age of existing buses from nine years to seven years.
What do you think of SBS Transit¡¯s latest investment on a new fleet of buses?

That’s the number that Singaporeans must wake up to. If it hasn’t set off alarm bells in you, you are not paying enough attention. It’s the number that the PAP wants to increase our population to. Unbelievable? Here’s what National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan: “A recent review of our long-term land use and transportation plan concluded that we have enough land to cater to a population of 6.5 million.”
Let’s start with the obvious. Singapore is already the third most densely populated country in the world with a density of 7,023 persons/sq km. Even Hong Kong – long known for its crowded roads and housing estates – is less dense (6,349 persons/sq km).
That was the data for 2009 where the number of people on this island was 4.98 million. The Govenment announced last week that the new number is 5.08 million – an increase of 100,000 in just a year.
Out of the 5.08 million, only 3.23 million are Singaporeans which makes 36 percent of the population foreigners. In other words for every three persons you see around you, one is not a Singaporean.
And because of the PAP’s very deliberate policy of flooding this country with foreigners, we have housing prices shooting through the roof because non-Singaporeans continue to buy property here like there was no tomorrow.
The MRT trains are at bursting point. One netizen reported that a station was so crowded that people coming up from the escalator could not get off safely because the train platform was filled with commuters.
Our roads are getting ever more crowded despite ERP gantries sprouting up like mushrooms. We’re digging more and more tunnels for the trains without knowing whether they are contributing to the unprecedented floods that we have had.
Foreign Minister George Yeo admitted that we needed a masterplan to figure out how to house all the foreign workers here. We’re beginning to see fights breakout between the foreign nationals. Violent crime is on the rise.
With all these problems still unresolved the PAP is, quite incredibly, bringing 80,000 more foreigners this year. This will continue until we hit 6.5 million over the next several years, by which time we will see more foreigners than Singaporeans in Singapore.
That is quite a statistic.
But it is more than a statistic. It is our lives and our future that the PAP is playing wth.
Whether our infrastructure will be able to cope with such a load no one really knows. What social impact the mass immigation will have on society is anybody’s guess. The Government has not conducted any study or produced any evidence that this small island can cope with 6.5 million.
All we have is Mr Mah Bow Tan’s proclamation on his party’s website that “so long as we have a leadership that has the foresight to anticipate challenges,” having 6.5 million people here will be good for Singapore. This coming from someone who could not even properly anticipate the supply HDB flats to meet the needs of the population.
We have the environment minister who can’t keep the floods out and the home Minister who can’t keep terrorist suspects in.
Then we have the sports minister who, even with an over-sized budget of $387 million, can’t properly organise a mini-Olympic games.
We also have the trade and finance ministers who could not see the looming global financial crisis in 2008 despite clear warning signals. As a result, Temasek and GIC lost $140 billion from bad investments.
Then there is the trade union minister who in the depth of the recession tells us that he feels so rich.
Leadership? Foresight?
There has been no public consultation, no debate and no proper scrutiny over this so-called foreign talent policy. All we have is Mr Mah’s banal promise. If this dangerous 6.5-million experiment fails, it will be too late. We, the ordinary folks, will be the ones paying for the mess.
The ministers who live in their Gurkha-guarded homes, far removed from the daily stresses that they place upon us, will not be affected. They will ask us to “bear with it” like the prime minister did in his ND Rally.
Singaporeans must rally around this issue. We must check the PAP’s recklessness and stop it from increasing our population by another 30 percent!
GARDENER Supari Ahmad was squatting and picking up dry leaves along the driveway at No. 1 King Albert Park condominium at about 1.20pm on April 26. As his back was turned to the road, the 62-year-old probably did not see a Nissan Murano sports utility vehicle coming towards him. Taken to the National University Hospital (NUH), he became unresponsive. He died of complications arising from a fractured skull two days later.

At a coroner inquiry on Wednesday, State Coroner Victor Yeo returned an open verdict as he said the police was not able to determine how the collision took place. The court also did not have the benefit of the sworn testimony of the driver of the SUV, Madam Goi Pei Ling. The housewife, 37, was summoned to court as a potential defendant - which means she could be held criminally liable for the accident - but she chose to remain silent.

Madam Goi told police she had raised her left hand to acknowledge the security officer at the condo's main entrance without looking at him. She did not see Mr Supari and her first inkling of the accident was noises from beneath the car. She stopped and found him lying injured at the rear of her SUV. Security officer Ananthan Suppaya, 27, told Senior Staff Sergeant Oh that he noticed Madam Goi turning in at a speed of less than 10kmh.

The coroner did note that while the SUV's width was less than 1.9m wide, there was at least 1.35m leeway on either side of the 4.6m-wide driveway. For this reason, he said he was also unable to rule out the strong possibility that Madam Goi had failed to keep a proper lookout or if she had driven too close to the left kerb. It is now up the Attorney-General's Chambers to decide if she is to be prosecuted.
